Music

Music at SMUPS thrives and playing and performing is at the heart of all lessons.

Every child is given the opportunity to learn an instrument through specialised whole class instrumental teaching. In KS1, children start their musical journeys exploring a range of different tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Rhythm is explored through African-Drumming and pitch is explored using boom whackers and glockenspiels. In KS2, children learn how to play the recorder and progress to learning the flute in years 5 and 6.

Musical creativity is explored through composition and improvisation and a culturally diverse range of musical genres is experienced. Children are encouraged to extend their musical learning further through a range of rich extra-curricular activities including individual instrumental teaching, flute club and choir. Throughout the year, there are many exciting performance opportunities within the school and local community.
